Rivaling Food Companies

Advertising & Branding Strategies

Food companies use a wide variety of advertising and branding techniques. Most companies have a logo, slogan, and/or jingle. A lot of the time logos and slogans go hand-in-hand and the audience is able to associate one with the other.

Logos

Logos are selected in order to stand out and be associated with a specific company. They are created to be memorable so companies carefully select the elements such as color, shape and typography.

Decisions such as color are made carefully when developing a company logo because there is a psychological factor. Different colors can elicit specific emotions which can help appeal to the company's target audience. Colors can say a lot about a companies brand such as black and white coming off as sleek and elegant.

Warm colors like red and orange tend to come off as energetic and exciting. Many companies opt for the use of red in their logo like McDonald's, Coca-Cola, Skippy, and Twix. Cooler colors such as blue and green are associated with calm and trust. Bright colors like yellow and pink are positive and grab your attention. And neutral colors give off an elegance and sophistication.¹

Slogans

Slogans are meant to be brief and effective. When companies curate their slogans the target audience, catchiness and brand values are considered. Slogans allow for the company to stand out and they have a way of sticking with you. The phrase typically contains elements such as rhythm, alliteration and punning to make recall easier. They also can appeal to particular wants or needs such as appetite or thirst. ²

Jingles

The jingle a company uses can reveal the type of food they offer as well as their brand values. Jingles are a great opportunity for brands to appeal to a specific audience as they are engaging and catchy. Without ever having had Burger King or seeing the commercial, I used to sing their jingle all the time after hearing my mom sing it once. Similar to slogans, jingles also tend to use sound devices such as rhyming and alliteration, making them more memorable. ³
